To give you some idea of what Shock and Awe will entail, read this description of Dresden:

“At the time, town was full of refugees fleeing from the advancing Red Army. Bomber Command was ordered to attack Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and other east German cities to ‘cause confusion in the evacuation from the east’ and ‘hamper the movements of troops from the west’.

“This directive led to the raid on Dresden and marked the erosion of one last moral restriction in the bombing war: the term ‘evacuation from the east’ did not refer to retreating troops but to the civilian refugees fleeing from the advancing Russians.

“Although these refugees clearly did not contribute to the German war effort, they were considered legitimate targets simply because the chaos caused by attacks on them might obstruct German troop reinforcements to the Eastern Front.

“There are reports that even civilians fleeing the firestorm engulfing Dresden in February 1945 were strafed by British and American aircraft.

“The fire-bombing consisted of dropping large amounts of high-explosive to expose the timbers within buildings, followed by incendiary devices (fire-sticks) to ignite them and then more high-explosives to hamper the efforts of the fire services.

“This eventually created a self-sustaining ‘fire storm’ with temperatures peaking at over 1500 degrees C. After the area caught fire, the air above the bombed area, become extremely hot and rose rapidly. Cold air then rushed in at ground level from the outside and people were sucked into the fire.

“3,900 tonnes of bombs were dropped. Out of 28,410 houses in the inner city of Dresden, 24,866 were destroyed. An area of 15 square kilometers was totally destroyed, among that: 14,000 homes, 72 schools, 22 hospitals, 19 churches, 5 theaters, 50 bank and insurance companies, 31 department stores, 31 large hotels, and 62 administration buildings.”

This is 2003! Not 1945! They have precision guided bombs, which target military and governmental targets and NOT civilian targets. In WWII they used “dumb” bombs, which landed anywhere. But, today it’s different, there are reports that Iraqis feel safe enough to watch from their roofs and streets because they know these bombs are accurate.

Oh, yeah. I remember the last war, when they said the same thing. They said they were so precise, they could shoot them through a doorway!

You may be right, but on what logical grounds does any sane person give this administration the benefit of the doubt? Because they said so?

Yes, we (claim) to have these precision weapons. But the concept of ‘shock & awe’ is to bomb the hell out of an area to scare people. The first missles fired? Sure, they went straight to their targets. But tell me, do you really believe that these hundreds are all going to hit in the exact same spot? Would that fill you with shock? Awe? This is pitiful.

Opie: The so-called surgical strike of Wednesday night killed approximatelyl a dozen or so civilians. And supposedly “smart” weapons were used. Iraqi media reported only 1 dead and about a dozen injured in Wednesday’s strike. Of course civilians are going to die, smart bombs don’t always hit their target. I don’t believe everything what our government says…I try my best to get different sides of the story. And in my opinion, I feel this war is not illegal. Yes, maybe the U.S. could have tried diplomacy for a little while longer, but will it really make a difference? No.

Opie, shure they are precise, but you must know that when the tomahawk was presented, the manufacturer redefined precision. They said that it was 80% acurate, but that meant that 80% of the times the misile got launched, not that it did hit the target. Of course this was way back in 88, but don’t be fooled by tecnology.

They kill people, and there is not such thing as a clean war. It is only clean for the army with the best technology, not for the bombed people.
