Well, I'm pleased as all get out. Wired.com's lead story is about B2I and headlined, "Reporter Takes His Weblog to War." It tends to focus on my technology plans -- sat-phones, laptops, etc. -- more so than my plans for an independent journalism, but overall a decent story. I hope this sends my traffic up and there have already been some new donations. Let's see if this attention helps out.

Stay tuned.

Hi Chris, would you consider buddying up with Geraldo? He could work as your flak jacket!

LOL — I think that’s an excellent use for Geraldo. I liked how in Afghanistan he said he would take Osama out if he ran across him…

So, Christopher, you live off donations? Journalists are poor? :) I’m considering of possibly pursuing a career in journalism, but I don’t want to live on ends meet.

Hey Opie—

Why do you keep changing your email address in your comments?

Anway, no, I don’t live off donations. I have a regular freelancing gig that covers the rent etc., and I do other assignments that I’m using to save up for this trip. The donations won’t come close to covering the total cost, but I’m hoping they’ll make up around half. The rest comes from me. But I do OK. If you’re used to a lavish lifestyle, don’t become a journalist, though. I’m not poor by any means, but I ain’t gettin’ rich any time soon. Do journalism out of conviction, not a paycheck.

I have only used 2 email addresses here, but one of them I no longer use. So, I’m using the 123box one, I actually have several email addresses. Also, I tried to put some links in the URL so then my email doesn’t appear.

I read the article on your website, so you planning on going to Iraq in April? What happens if the war hasn’t started yet? Almost all Kurds support the U.S., and so since you may be friends with some of them, why not support the war so they can be freed? There is word, that the oil fields are being mined and SCUD missiles are positioned in the western desert of Iraq etc. Iraq may even pre-emptively strike, but that is highly unlikely because they are winning the PR battle.

Well, consider this your first commenter from the Wired News story; I posted a sentence about this exploit today. I have reservations about the project from the point of view of your personal safety, but I think it’s a laudable idea nonetheless.

you’ve removed some comments. why?

Have I? Which ones are you referring to?

About me

Hi there! Thanks for stopping in. I'm Christopher Allbritton, former AP and New York Daily News reporter. In 2002, I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it "looking for trouble.") In March 2003, I made it back in time for the war, becoming the Web's first fully reader-funded journalist-blogger. With the support of thousands of readers, we raised almost $15,000. You can read my dispatches here. It was one of the moments in journalism when everything worked. It was a grand -- and successful -- experiment in independent journalism. In 2004, I moved to Iraq, where I would spend the next two years. It was a raucous, scary and exciting place with a lot of news going on. But I've since moved on to Beirut and the wider region. I now report for a variety of outlets.

Won't you consider donating to support reportage from the Middle East? Your generosity directly feeds reporting costs such as visas, travel, fees and other expenses. I already have a bullet-proof vest, so no need to fund that.
