Back to the Future

Has anyone thought to give _The Onion_ a Pulitzer Prize? Because this story, considered quite funny when Bush took office in January 2001, isn't quite so funny anymore. (Thanks to Matt Simpson for jogging my memory on this one.)

Egged on by Christopher at Back to Iraq 2.0, I went to the Onion's January 2001 issue and found: Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least... Read More

Creepy ;)

Great idea Christopher!! I think i am not the only one fed up with official News Coverage….

Oh. My. God. That’s really freaky.

Today, June 6,2003 is a day we celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of the end of TYRANNY. I sadly salute all the souls that have fought for liberty, justice and truth. On this great historic anniversary, and in light of the recent events around the world, can we honestly say we find ourselves any more well off, at a stand still or have we already regressed into the limbo that we can only call as failure? What have we done to ease the plight of humanity, conversely, what have we done to degrade it? We all reflect on past history but cannot manage to learn from them. We as a peolple should not just never forget, we should LEARN from what has happened before. If we do not learn from the past, shall we be doomed to repeat it over and over again?

About me

Hi there! Thanks for stopping in. I'm Christopher Allbritton, former AP and New York Daily News reporter. In 2002, I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it "looking for trouble.") In March 2003, I made it back in time for the war, becoming the Web's first fully reader-funded journalist-blogger. With the support of thousands of readers, we raised almost $15,000. You can read my dispatches here. It was one of the moments in journalism when everything worked. It was a grand -- and successful -- experiment in independent journalism. In 2004, I moved to Iraq, where I would spend the next two years. It was a raucous, scary and exciting place with a lot of news going on. But I've since moved on to Beirut and the wider region. I now report for a variety of outlets.

Won't you consider donating to support reportage from the Middle East? Your generosity directly feeds reporting costs such as visas, travel, fees and other expenses. I already have a bullet-proof vest, so no need to fund that.
