Traveling this week

Hello all. From March 6 to March 14 I'll be in Japan on assignment and then after that I'll be in Austin until the 17th for SXSW, where I'm speaking on a panel. Updates will likely be light to nil, barring something huge. Everyone enjoy a good spring break! Thanks for your continued reading! Best, Christopher

I’m going to miss the first 3 days on the interactive fest because I have to drill with the Texas National Guard. Which panel are you speaking on?

From the first link Carl put up, and then digging in all the PDFs of the panel schedules at the bottom of the page, it looks like Chris is scheduled (as of Feb 1, 2004) for Tuesday, 3/16, 10-11am, in the panel called “Blogging, Journalism and Politics”, in room? 18AB.

A bit more at:

That’s right. I’ll be at that panel, barring death from jet lag. Man, Japan is tiring.

Chris, are you visiting only Tokyo? I’m out in western Japan, working in Osaka today. But yeah, I agree, even after 8 years here, the madness can be suffocating at times. Got to get out to the countryside to breathe a little, I’ve found. Then it’s not so bad. How much longer in Japan, btw?

Actually, Chris, you might be interested in Pico Iyer’s article from the Sunday NY Times…

Whoops. I see you’re here till the 14th. Enjoy your visit as much as you can!

I am about 4 weeks within completion of my legal obligation to the Texas Army National Guard and now I’ve have been told that I will have to be involuntarily extended and sent to Iraq. I have about 3 weeks left in Austin and about 3 months left in Texas before being forced into war against my will. I have already told my commander that I wish to request Conscientious Objector Status which means I have an ethical and moral objection to this war. But that takes more than 3 months to process. So wish me luck.

About me

Hi there! Thanks for stopping in. I'm Christopher Allbritton, former AP and New York Daily News reporter. In 2002, I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it "looking for trouble.") In March 2003, I made it back in time for the war, becoming the Web's first fully reader-funded journalist-blogger. With the support of thousands of readers, we raised almost $15,000. You can read my dispatches here. It was one of the moments in journalism when everything worked. It was a grand -- and successful -- experiment in independent journalism. In 2004, I moved to Iraq, where I would spend the next two years. It was a raucous, scary and exciting place with a lot of news going on. But I've since moved on to Beirut and the wider region. I now report for a variety of outlets.

Won't you consider donating to support reportage from the Middle East? Your generosity directly feeds reporting costs such as visas, travel, fees and other expenses. I already have a bullet-proof vest, so no need to fund that.
