The Sound of Silence

Sorry for the delays in postings. WIth everything going on -- cancellation of national conference, car bombs on churches and Najaf -- I'm swamped under deadlines. I'm fine, but hoping to get a post on the current situation up soon.

Peace out my brother,

I think it should be painfully clear to everyone that despite Rumsfeld’s assertions, things have not quieted down at all. 700 Iraqis died in Bagdad alone last month, and US soliders are dying at a faster rate than before the handover. Meanwhile, no one has a clue how the US can get out and save face.

I just wonder how many Americans are going to die before we diplomatically limp away with little if any credibility left.

I always look forward to your new posts, Chris, but certainly understand you have other priorities. I wish for your continued safety. Keep up the great work!

About me

Hi there! Thanks for stopping in. I'm Christopher Allbritton, former AP and New York Daily News reporter. In 2002, I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it "looking for trouble.") In March 2003, I made it back in time for the war, becoming the Web's first fully reader-funded journalist-blogger. With the support of thousands of readers, we raised almost $15,000. You can read my dispatches here. It was one of the moments in journalism when everything worked. It was a grand -- and successful -- experiment in independent journalism. In 2004, I moved to Iraq, where I would spend the next two years. It was a raucous, scary and exciting place with a lot of news going on. But I've since moved on to Beirut and the wider region. I now report for a variety of outlets.

Won't you consider donating to support reportage from the Middle East? Your generosity directly feeds reporting costs such as visas, travel, fees and other expenses. I already have a bullet-proof vest, so no need to fund that.
