Head in the Desert Sand

Unbelievable:

In Washington, the State Department insisted that US policy in Iraq was succeeding and denied that political negotiations had collapsed, only that they had paused. "Come on, let's not blow this out of proportion," said spokesman Adam Ereli. He denied reports of widespread violence, speaking of "some incidents".

Look, I'm really sorry reality is intruding on your little fantasy but a lot of people are probably going to die in the coming days and weeks because of the idea that if you just repeat something enough times, it will come true.

Enough already. Shut your mouths; you people in Washington have caused enough damage already.

We’re getting minimum coverage here in the US, Chris. Thanks for your posts. Be cool.

I’m not really sure how to take this entry. Sure, I understand that government spokespeople don’t always speak the truth - and that’s why I read your blog - but I don’t understand how Washington rhetoric is going to change the situation in Iraq.

What exactly would you like them to say? And what exactly would you hope that a change in message would achieve?

I still have the feeling that the US is in Iraq for a long time and Washington is possibly taking the bird’s eye view that the mosque destruction is an incident rather than a complete meltdown. And, this could possibly be the correct position in the longer term.

Is your magazine calling this a civil war ?

The spinning going on here in the states is horrible. From what I gather on the net this is very, very bad and my heart hurts for the Iraqi people and all our soldiers caught in the middle of this created mess. Faux News has even suggested that ‘civil’ war might be a good thing! Your posts are important Chris. Please be safe.

Chris, what do you think is the possibility this? The US will be driven out of Iraq, a result of the civil war. In the chaos, the Hussein trial will collapse and he will escape. The Bush administration will be left in the unenviable position of having absolutely nothing to show for its colossal stupidity: no WMDs, no Hussein, no control of the Iraqi oil, nothing but the blood of tens of thousands of innocent victims, and the wrath of millions in the muslim world.

Hahahaha, you wish, Tom.

About me

Hi there! Thanks for stopping in. I'm Christopher Allbritton, former AP and New York Daily News reporter. In 2002, I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it "looking for trouble.") In March 2003, I made it back in time for the war, becoming the Web's first fully reader-funded journalist-blogger. With the support of thousands of readers, we raised almost $15,000. You can read my dispatches here. It was one of the moments in journalism when everything worked. It was a grand -- and successful -- experiment in independent journalism. In 2004, I moved to Iraq, where I would spend the next two years. It was a raucous, scary and exciting place with a lot of news going on. But I've since moved on to Beirut and the wider region. I now report for a variety of outlets.
