MATTHEWS: Where is the heart of the zealotry here? Do you have a name of a person who is really saying, we will do anything it takes to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon?
HERSH: The one that's on the record is George Bush, and so is Mr. Cheney. Bush has said repeatedly, again, people talk to me and they use the word messianic. He has had two red lines that the Iranians cannot cross. One is Iran is planning to run a small pilot program for enriching uranium, probably in the next month or two, maybe six week. If they do that, that's it for Bush. That's a line they can't cross.
Chris Matthews and Seymour Hersh on "Hardball," April 10, 2006
... and chaser.
TEHRAN -- Iran announced Tuesday that its nuclear engineers had advanced to a new phase in the enrichment of uranium, and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a series of the country's ruling clerics declared that the nation would now speed ahead, in defiance of a United Nations Security Council warning, to produce nuclear fuel on an industrial scale.President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in a speech that was broadcast live from the city of Mashad, said Iran is determined to develop production on an industrial scale.
"Iran has joined the nuclear countries of the world," Mr. Ahmadinejad said during a large, carefully staged and nationally televised celebration in Mashhad, which included video presentations of each step of the nuclear process that he declared Iran had mastered. "The nuclear fuel cycle at the laboratory level has been completed, and uranium with the desired enrichment for nuclear power plants was achieved."Iran Reports Big Advance in Enrichment of Uranium

As now you are there, I do recommend to visit, Qum, quite sure it would be interesting for you (even with regard to Iraq reporting)…And Asfahan, they used to say “Asfahan Nusf Jihan”, Asfahan is half of the world, or something like that, if you see Asfahan means you saw half of the world!
Given the current administration track record I would say we should be afraid, very afraid. I think that they would stop at nothing in an effort to justify their military ambitions towards Iran. In Iraq, Bush established his doctrine of pre-emption with his shoot first and ask questions later approach. Even then when it comes to answering questions all we get is a song and dance about faulty intelligence and when pressed for an accounting of the facts, they cite irresponsible reporting. The administration continues to wave the bloody shirt and declare that we are at war with terrorism. For some reason I always get this image of Jack Nicolson on the stand in a Few Good Men screaming back and waving his finger at Tom Cruise – “you want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” Faith, trust and belief are not things that come to mind when I think about the administration. Duplicity, hypocrisy, and self interest are probably more to the point. But back on point, be afraid not of Iran but those in the white house who embrace a policy of primacy for the USA.
Iran is less of a threat than Saddam ever was. Either Putin checks Bush or the Military refuses(my hope) to go along.
The Bush Regime will attack. Ground forces will take the So. oilfields and the all important Kharg Island facility. These were Saddam’s objectives when he attacked Iran. Other objectives will be points along the Gulf to secure the waterway. Most likely Saudi Aircraft painted U.S. will be used also.
Since March has passed the attack will either be this month or they may wait till June.
The intent is to spread the conflict for more Power and Profit. The Alsqa Mosque complex in Jerusalem will be destroyed and the cornerstones of Solomans Temple will be laid. This must be done by the end of he Hebrew Year for Prophecy to hold true.
Let’s hope the Military protects from our domestic enemies.
May God Bless Humanity. ‘Cause no one else is gonna. Peace.
well that is different
to human: um, huh?
Pass the kouchie, human.
It’s hard for me to decide who the bigger asshole is in this situation - Bush or Ahmadinejad. It would be nice if they would run off and have their pissing contest somewhere far away, leaving the rest of us to get on with our lives.
Wat - I don’t disagree with you that pre-emption is a dangerous game, but I take issue with your statement “be not afraid of Iran.” Whatever you think about American ambitions, Iran has developed a nuclear program which is, in most estimations, the foundations for a weapons program. Iran have been offered a number of options to save face and achieve the same goals of a peaceful nuclear program and they have rejected them.
So, say what you will about the US, but I’m VERY worried about Iran as the last thing the world needs is another member of the world nuclear power ‘club’. It’s hard enough to keep friendly nations in check (e.g. India), I can’t even imagine trying to control the ambitions of a nefarious regime.
well that is different
Ahmadinejad or Bush? Whos the bigger asshole? You really cant decide? After all thats happened. The only possible explanation is you’re racist. Or do yiou know soemthing about Ahmadinejad war crimes that you’re not sharing?
What does that mean, Kevser?
Bush isn’t operating in an asshole-vacuum here. Both he and Ahmadinejad have remarkably high asshole-quotients. Ahmadinejad is doing everything he can to provoke a confrontation.
“Double standards” is my view. Certainly elements of the current Iranian leadership are, by the sound of it, perhaps certifiably looney by most normal standard. Or religiously motivated, which basically means the same thing. But they also definitely have at least 10,000 nukes potentially pointed at them. Not just US ones either - the Israelis, far as I’m aware, have never said that they would never use nukes “premptively.” (Mainly because they still don’t officially admit to having any.) All this fuss because the Iranians might, in five or ten years, perhaps clandestinely develop and test one bomb. No delivery system to get it anywhere near the US for at least as many years. Tons of time for negotiation and moderation. And the US leadership? A “born again” nutcase who reportedly believes in The Rapture and Armageddon? Before him, a sleazeball who played around with interns and cigars? Before him, a dotard with Alzheimers whose wife was guided by astrologers? These guys can be trusted with their fingers on a very big button, but we all have to go into convulsions because the Iranians, who have not attacked anywhere else for hundreds of years, just might have a very tiny button within reach one day? Oh well, double standards. A US attack on Iran this year seems inevitable, when you think about it from that point of view.
Jeff – My point is more along the line of who is the more immediate danger. Iran has yet to conduct a nuclear test. An attack on facilities in Iran now by the USAF would lead probably to a direct military confrontation in Iraq and retaliatory strikes against US units elsewhere in the Middle East. There is no reason to assume that the Iranians would roll over and play dead. They are a very nationalistic people with pride in a history that goes back thousands of years. You then have the problem of the political vacuum in Iraq with the most organized units being the Shiia militias or govt. units controlled by them sitting in the rear of any US troops that might be deployed toward Iran. This idea does not work on so many different levels that I could not imagine the Administration even would contemplate it as a viable option. But then I didn’t think Bush would invade Iraq. I watched the dog and pony show at the UN put on by Powell, the pitch at the State of the Union by Bush, and the neocons making the rounds of talking heads on Sunday believing that the American people are not that gullible. If the administration wants a regime change in Iran bombing the nascence nuclear facilities is not going to do it. Any Pro American sediment that might exist in Iran and for that matter the rest of the Middle East is gone.

Check it out. Experts speak of a June attack on Iran ;
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/2/20/221619/711
Go to the link and you will see the article ( from feb/2005 ) predicted an attack in June—-2005<—
SO “experts” have only updated their predictions and prefer to bury past predictions
go figger.
I predict the US will not attack Iran and be “SLAMMED” by the EU for doing the dirty police work for the EU.
Let them shed EU blood to make an EU statement against Iran.
imo, The president of Iran has enough support in the west to prevent any real violent threat to be carried out against Iran.
The west is trying to talk themselves out of a crises they do not have the gonads in order to make a stand about their previously released statements.
lol
sad but true. Iran, you will have your nuke power and the sword of preset nuclear tipped missiles will be dialed in to Tehran as your president wishes. It’s how this 2nd Cold War will play out.
So the iranian leader has launched an unprovoked attack on a very underdeveloped country resulting in, oh well, what the hell, 40,000 deaths and god knows how much misery? The us administration now tortures, bombs, imprisons people without any representation, dissapears people, breaks laws without consequence and is doing everything it can to provoke the iranians. There is no moral equivelancy here. None whatsoever. So if the evidence suggests that Bush is the in fact the agressor, the baby killer, the imprisoner of thousands of innocents, responssible for the deaths of tens of thousands, then to say that the iranian leader is as bad is a racist and chauvanist remark. Still this is what the NYT and CNN spout everyday, so why would anyone question it?
Iran is massively involved already in Iraq. She is playing both Sunni and Shia like a violin. However, not as secretly as she would like. Her agents have been caught time and again: they do sing like canaries.
Ahmadi-Nejad has made it quite clear that his intent is to create a world without America. That is his number one strategic goal. The is no conflict between him and the supreme mullahs.
BTW Ahmadi-Nejad has already taken effective control of the government. His appointees are simply everywhere now.
Iran already has at least a token nuclear deterent. Iran has done all that is possible to advertise it except pop one off. To do so would bring and end to their NPT rights. It is with these that Iran is importing nuclear technology from Germany and Russia. So a blast carries too many negatives. Instead, Iran intends to follow the Israeli example: just build and build — never detonate.
Iran’s goal is to sit at the big table and negotiate as a nuclear equal with America, Russia and China. She intends to co-opt OPEC members or absorb them.
Right now, she is whistling pass the frontlines of WWIV. If allowed to proceed, Iran will be extremely well situated to take over the ‘stans’.
Ahmadi-Nejad’s play is so provocative that one must wonder if Iran is attempting to be a poisoned pawn.
Because of the global stakes expect the lid to blow wide open: anything can happen.
Any action against Iran is likely to initiate nuclear war. America wants regime change which is Iran’s red line: reason enough to use or loose any nukes she has managed to field.
All of the dis-information inre Iran not getting the bomb for a decade is designed to remove time pressure from the national command authorities. Remember Sun Tsu — everything professed is the opposite of truth. ( Iran’s bomb is transformed into maybe in ten years… invasion can happen at any time becomes it’s impossible… etc.)
The utterly unique confab of former Defense and State Secretaries in January over ‘Iraq’ … yeah.
‘No blood for oil’ will be transformed into ‘No oil without blood’. The West has a die hard enemy astride it’s energy throat. Even praying towards Mecca won’t make it go away.
