Wow, donations for journalism?

It is with no small amount of mixed feelings that I notice that Michael Totten has embarked on a daring new experiment in reader-funded journalism.

Oh, wait. It's not new at all. (See: Iraq.com, Back-to-)

On the one hand, I'm glad that more people are working to do their own thing and bringing nuanced, insightful journalism to the reading public without the baggage that mainstream media often attach. On the other hand, Totten usually has a somewhat conservative rah-Amurricah tone that sets my teeth a-grate. That said, he does get out there and do some reporting. While he's not my cup of tea -- I find his Middle East reporting naive and American-centric -- give him a read. I'll let you decide if it's worth donating. I'm going to pop him $5 on principle.

Five Dollars?

Yo, Chris, thanks for the link and the five bucks, even if you’re also critical.

I never said I was the first person to go anywhere with reader donations. Going on a donation-funded trip to Iraq was an experiment for me personally. I knew you already did it, as did Michael Yon and Bill Roggio. I didn’t know if I could do it too.

I also still don’t know if I can afford to visit other places like Israel, Syria, and Iran on reader donations. I’m running an experiment to find out because if I can do it, I’m going to do it.

“conservative rah-Amurricah tone that sets my teeth a-grate” which by ignoring whats happening in Iraq ands elsewhere is facilitating teeth grating with a drill somewhere in bulgaria, poland or romania. By all means support these imperial cheerleaders!

Nothing wrong with hitting , the tip jar.

currently, I can’t get into the Totten sight

maybe a temporary problem. I did like reading about the travels and pics of Cyprus. Also the “devil worshippers” in Iraq.

far far from MSM reporting.

LOL

About me

Hi there! Thanks for stopping in. I'm Christopher Allbritton, former AP and New York Daily News reporter. In 2002, I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it "looking for trouble.") In March 2003, I made it back in time for the war, becoming the Web's first fully reader-funded journalist-blogger. With the support of thousands of readers, we raised almost $15,000. You can read my dispatches here. It was one of the moments in journalism when everything worked. It was a grand -- and successful -- experiment in independent journalism. In 2004, I moved to Iraq, where I would spend the next two years. It was a raucous, scary and exciting place with a lot of news going on. But I've since moved on to Beirut and the wider region. I now report for a variety of outlets.

Won't you consider donating to support reportage from the Middle East? Your generosity directly feeds reporting costs such as visas, travel, fees and other expenses. I already have a bullet-proof vest, so no need to fund that.
